Britons were urged to check SANPARKS for guidance on hazards such as wildfires and verify cable car availability if they plan to use it.
The FCDO also warned of “recent violent attacks and muggings against hikers and foreign tourists in Table Mountain National Park, including on Lion’s Head and Signal Hill”.
Visitors were advised to “avoid quieter areas, especially during early mornings and evenings”.
The guidance recommended staying on busy, marked trails, hiking on popular days like the weekend, and never hiking alone.
Local safety resources include The Hikers Network, which offers a free safety tracking service. Some Cape Town residents coordinate group hikes via this, in addition to Facebook.
Wildfires
Wildfires pose a risk in both rural and urban areas of South Africa during hot, dry weather.
The FCDO said that these fires can affect Cape Town and Table Mountain National Park.
Britons were told: “Follow evacuation orders if requested. If you see a wildfire, move to a safe place away from vegetation and smoke.
“If you are inside a building or a car and judge it is safe to stay there, close all vents and windows.”
Air travel
British tourists should also be aware of potential air travel disruptions in South Africa.
The FCDO added: “There have been travel delays and disruptions at airports due to power outages and refuelling disruptions.”
Travellers were advised to monitor the latest updates from airports. Travellers can consult the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) X feed for the latest updates.
