Springwell Bay, an eight-year-old bay gelding, has died after suffering a fatal injury at Cheltenham Festival.
The horse fell during The Jack Richards Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase on Wednesday afternoon.
Veterinary professionals immediately attended to Springwell Bay after the fall, but were unable to save him.
The tragedy occurred during the second race of the day, which began at 2pm.

Springwell Bay, trained by Jonjo and AJ O’Neill, becomes the first equine fatality at this year’s Festival.
He was immediately tended to by veterinary staff following the incident, but the injury proved fatal.
ITV Racing’s Ed Chamberlin confirmed the sad news during the broadcast.
“There will be a sad postscript to the race I’m afraid because I have been handed a note to say that Springwell Bay, who took a nasty fall and was immediately tended to by the veterinary professionals, sadly sustained a fatal injury,” he said.

He added: “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the connections of Springwell Bay. That is a sad finish to the race that was won by Caldwell Potter.”
Cheltenham also released an official statement.
“In our second race of the day, Springwell Bay was immediately attended to by our veterinary professionals, but sadly sustained a fatal injury. Our heartfelt condolences are with his connections,” the statement read.
Springwell Bay had previously enjoyed success at Cheltenham meetings.
He won the Betfair Exchange Handicap Chase in January after placing at meetings in November and December.
Cheltenham Racecourse has consistently ranked at or near the top of Britain’s most lethal courses since 2000.
In March 2024 alone, two horses were killed as a result of racing at the Festival.
The venue’s safety record has been under scrutiny with the significant number of equine deaths over the past two decades.

The British Horse Racing Authority implements a thorough fatality review process when racehorses die.
This involves gathering information from racecourse staff, jockeys, trainers, veterinary surgeons and relevant medication and training records.
All data is then collated, analysed and reviewed by a panel of industry experts.
The BHA reports that over £50 million has been invested into advancing equine health, veterinary science and research since 2000.
Despite these investments, Cheltenham continues to see fatalities.
The death of Springwell Bay brings the total number of horses killed at the Festival since March 2000 to 77.
