Drivers are being warned of hours-long delays on the M25 as contractors work to repair roads with miles of standstill traffic and other motorists deal with a broken down vehicle.

National Highways: South East is warning that three of four lanes on the M25 anticlockwise between J13 Heathrow Airport and J12 Thorpe Park are closed.

The transport organisation stated that it was due to a “large pothole”, with traffic officers on the scene awaiting contractors for an immediate repair.

At first, drivers were warned of 45 minutes of delays on the approach, although this has since been extended to more than 60 minutes.

Motorists are also stuck near the Dartford Crossing following an earlier vehicle breakdown with traffic building on the M25 anticlockwise and the A2 on the London-bound carriageway from Gravesend to Bexleyheath.

The vehicle broke down near junction 1a on the M25 for the Dartford Crossing, causing congestion to junction 3 for the Swanley Interchange.

National Highways is warning of standstill traffic along the M25 anticlockwise entry slip at junction J1A and the M25 clockwise at junction J30 in Essex.

It warns that normal traffic conditions may not return until 11am with slow-moving traffic being seen as far back as J3 anticlockwise.

In the most recent update, National Highways warned that there were “a number of breakdowns in the area” surrounding the Dartford Crossing.

It added: “They are in the process of being cleared so traffic should ease soon. Thank you for your patience.”

Drivers were forced to deal with further delays on the M25 yesterday after Hertfordshire Police dealt with a break-in at South Mimms motorway services.

Police services responded to reports that a gand had been breaking into cars at the services, prompting a closure of the M25 between J23 and J24.

The road remained closed for around an hour, with heavy congestion reported to J25 for the A10 Enfield, although traffic eventually subsided.
