Rome is a beautiful city in Italy and one that is much loved by British holidaymakers.
However, Britons making a trip there between December 24, 2024, and January 6, 2026, should heed specific guidance.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) provided new information on the Jubilee, which is taking place in Rome from late December.
Britons were told: “The Jubilee, known as the Holy Year, will take place in Rome from December 24, 2024 to January 6, 2026.
Britons have been warned that petty crime may increase due to a higher number of travellers

“The city is expected to be very busy, particularly when the bigger events take place.”
Britons planning on travelling to Rome during this time should consult the FCDO’s Jubilee 2025 – Holy Year information in the Safety and Security section.
Here, holidaymakers can find essential information on events, Pilgrim cards, transport around the city and the possibility of increased petty crime.
Before visiting Italy, Britons are advised to consult the FCDO for the most up-to-date information on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, health and getting help.
Jubilee 2025 – Holy Year
The FCDO stated: “The city of Rome expects a high number of visitors throughout the holy year of 2025, particularly during key events.”
Events
Holidaymakers were advised to check the official Jubilee website or download the Jubilee app for a calendar of events.
This will help holidaymakers to stay informed of anything that might affect their trip.
Pilgrim Card
Visitors planning on taking part in the Jubilee were advised to register for a free digital Pilgrim’s card.
They will need these to take part in the main Jubilee events and to organise a pilgrimage to the Holy Doors of the 4 Papal Basilicas of Rome: St. Peter’s in the Vatican, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major and St. Paul Outside the Walls.
Transport around the city
Visitors should be aware that transport routes around the city will be very busy. Local authorities may ask them to enter or leave by specific routes.
Britons were told to plan their journeys and leave plenty of time, particularly during large events.
For information on public transport in Rome during the Jubilee, visitors can see the Rome public transport website or use the Rome city journey planner.
Increased risk of petty crime
Visitors to Italy should be aware that levels of petty crime may increase during the Holy Year due to the higher number of travellers.

Before going abroad, Britons should always consult the FCDO’s latest information on their chosen destination.
Britons heading to Germany were recently warned that they risk catching an “infectious disease” that causes “chills and exhaustion”.
Further afield, tourists in a South Asian holiday hotspot were warned that terrorists are “very likely” to attempt an attack.
