Rory McIlroy finished joint second from last in the FedEx St Jude Championship, ending up 68th out of 70 after closing out with a four-over-par 74.

It comes after having to fork out £39million alongside fellow tennis star Tiger Woods to get their new SoFi Center up to scratch.

McIlroy and Woods teamed up as TGL to launch an innovative golf league and was scheduled to open in January earlier this year in Florida.

However, the simulated competition based in West Palm Gardens was postponed by 12 months after severe damage suffered largely to its inflatable domed roof.

Nine months after the incident, to avoid a similar situation breaking out, TGL bosses have had to shell out for a permanent structure, according to The Palm Beach Post.

Costs have piled up into the millions with McIlroy and Woods forking out £39m, with construction starting on March 18.

The outer shell is expected to be completed by early September before further work will take place on the interior including an arena for lighting, cameras and motorisation tech.

A 46-foot-by-64-foot Jumbotron-type screen will also be installed in the state-of-the-art facilities while PGA Tour players could be involved upon the new launch, which is set to be announced.

But on the course, McIlroy has had a heap of trouble in the opening PGA Tour play-offs, finishing nine-over-par and 26 shots behind winner Hideki Matsuyama.

Only Max Homa finished below him, as the world No. 3 shared joint-last with Jordan Spieth, who suffered a wrist injury and will miss the rest of the season as a result.

McIlroy gets back underway on Thursday when he tees up at the BMW Championship in Colorado before the concluding Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta the next week.

And despite his toils, the 35-year-old is still assured of a place in the Tour Championship field.

And while he remains in with a shout of claiming a fourth title, he will have to raise his game significantly to stand any chance of success this year.

His Sunday round included a triple-bogey at the par-three on the 14th hole after he hit the water from his tee shot and he only managed one birdie throughout the day – on the opening hole.
