Barbora Krejcikova has defeated Jasmine Paolini in a nail-biting women’s final at Wimbledon.

The Czech tennis star claimed her second Grand Slam title after winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Krejcikova, 28, the 31st seed, was an unexpected finalist but produced a dominant display in the deciding set.

Paolini, also 28, battled back against her Czech opponent after falling behind in the opening set.

The Italian missed out on claiming her first Grand Slam title shortly after finishing runner-up at the French Open against Iga Swiatek.

Krejcikova had to save two break points in the final game, before serving out with her third Championship point.

She also became the second Czech player in as many years to win the Venus Rosewater Dish after Marketa Vondrousova’s victory last year.

Today’s result from Centre Court push Paolini up from seventh to fifth in the world.

Krejcikova’s victory also delivered a major boost to her standing, jumping to 10th.

The 28-year-old raised her arms aloft as her serve prompted Paolini to knock the ball off the court.

Krejcikova then knocked the ball away before shaking embracing her opponent and shaking hands with the umpire.

Responding to the result, Paolini said: “Today I am a little bit sad. I try to keep smiling because I have to remember today is still a good day, I made the final of Wimbledon.

“I remember as a kid watching the final and cheering for Federer I have to say.

“It’s been a beautiful two weeks and I want to thank everyone who made it possible. The ball kids, the LTA. I’ll forget someone but please don’t be mad at me.”

Krejcikova said: “I don’t have any words right now, it’s just unbelievable, it’s definitely the best day of my tennis career and also the best day of my life.”

She added: “It’s super difficult to explain what I’m feeling right now. I would like to congratulate Jasmine and her team, she had great two weeks, it was a great final and we were fighting for every point.

“At the end I was the lucky one but it has been amazing what she’s been able to achieve in just a short period, so again congratulations.”
