England’s penalty curse appears to be a thing of the past as the Three Lions team celebrated victory over Switzerland with a flawless penalty shootout to progress to the semi-final of the Euro 2024 competition.
Switzerland took the lead in the second half with Breel Embolo sending the ball past Pickford in the 75th minute.
Gareth Southgate then made his moves immediately after going behind.
Luke Shaw, Cole Palmer and Eberechi Eze were brought on for Kieran Trippier, Kobbie Mainoo and Ezri Konsa.
However, less than five minutes later, Bukayo Saka managed to curl the ball past Yann Sommer.
Having gone to extra time and then penalties, the England squad put on a flawless display from the spot as Jordan Pickford saved Manuel Akanji’s effort.
Since 1990, England have only won four out of 11 penalty shootouts across all major competitions.
