Gary Lineker has hilariously revealed a Euro 2024 fan mistook him and Alan Shearer for a couple while covering the competition in Germany – with the Newcastle icon quipping he’s ‘never been so insulted’.
The pair have both been working for the BBC during the course of the tournament, which started on June 14.
But while they’re close off the field, it appears one supporter at the tournament got completely the wrong end of the stick.
Lineker, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, hilariously revealed the pair were approached by a German man.

He was keen to know how long they’d been together, completely unaware of who they were.
“Something’s just happened to us on the way here, to this apartment studio tonight,” he said.
“We had a little bit of Italian, which was lovely – a little bit of food after we did the early game – and came here to watch the Austria-Turkey game.
“And we walked past the little shop on the way and there’s the kind of musical theatre place on the way.
“And there was a guy on the way – a little crowd of people – and the guy starts shouting to me and Alan in German.

“And I’m saying, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I don’t speak German – do you speak English?’ and he said, ‘Ah yeah, I speak English’.
“He said, ‘I want to know how long have you two been together? You are a really lovely couple’.”
Shearer is 10 years younger than Lineker.
And the Newcastle icon has admitted he was shocked by the incident, quipping he’s ‘never been so insulted’.
“I thought he was concerned that some f***ing old man was about to abduct me or something like that,” he said.

“Honestly, I’ve never been so insulted in all my life. I’m sorry but yeah.”
Micah Richards also appeared on the podcast.
And the former Manchester City star was left amused, saying the pair would ‘make a lovely couple’.
Richards also said Shearer’s reaction was ‘harsh’ and asked whether the pair held hands.
Lineker, meanwhile, has been scathing in his assessment of England’s displays at Euro 2024.

Though the Three Lions are unbeaten, they’ve won just two of their four matches so far.
And Lineker said England looked like ‘lost souls’ during their hard-fought 2-1 win over Slovakia on Sunday, while also urging the Three Lions to improve.
“Just look at the quality of the players that England actually have at their disposal,” he said.
“But you’ve got to get something out of them.
“I look at them at the moment and I see a team that’s like lost souls.

“I don’t think they really know what they’re supposed to be doing, or what their jobs are, or how the team’s supposed to be playing.
“I’m sure they have been told but it’s whether they’ve bought into it.
“They’re playing in a kind of format or style that is alien to most of them, because most of them play a high press, with dynamic, electric short passing football [for their clubs].
“We’ve not seen any of that. So I actually feel for the players a little bit.”
