Britain’s Got Talent singer Tom Ball has hit back at ongoing claims from viewers that the judges have gone “soft” and letting any act through, reminding many that it is a variety show.

Ball competed in the 2022 series of the talent competition and won over Simon Cowell at his audition with a rendition of Sam Smith’s song Writing’s on the Wall and went on to finish in third place.

He was later invited back on as Noodle the Cat on the 2023 series, leaving the judges stunned. Since then his success has soared after being signed by independent label Westway Music with his debut album Curtain Call released back in March.

The singer recently spoke to GB News about the backlash from viewers who have claimed that Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and Bruno Tonioli have gone “soft” and put through “any old act”.

After revealing that he has only caught up with the show through highlights, he expressed: “I don’t know. I haven’t seen it personally myself, I think… the show is made for variety, it is a variety show.

“So I feel that it is a good thing that multiple different acts are going through and showcasing lots of different talent the UK has to offer. I don’t know really I don’t know how to answer it.

“As long as people are being entertained by it and getting the opportunity to perform and showcase their talent to the world I think it is great.”

As well as claiming the judges have gone soft, viewers have also said that they think a lot of the acts have been “fixed” to go through to the semi-finals, which came after Cowell stopped a performer midway through his performance.

He also told GB News: “From my experience on the show, as a singer, because I can speak from this perspective, I went in with five songs that I could sing.

“So I turned up with multiple songs, so I would say, I don’t know the current circumstance, but I would say that he has been stopped to sing another song then he knows what his second choice is straight away.

“So, going into that it might come across as seamless but he is already going on with four other songs in his back pocket so if they don’t like it, he can sing another one instead.

“From my experience, Simon is a very intelligent man, especially within the music industry and if he hears something and knows you have potential but maybe not from the song choice, and so he just wants that act to have the best possible chance.

“Which is why you come along with multiple song choices, so that if anyone goes ‘you wanna do this one instead’ you already have another one that is the one hope for doing well.”

There has been a lot of backlash to the ongoing series, from fix rows, lousy acts, miming claims and many annoyed with the fact that the judges keep tying the vote and sending it to the public.
