Britons looking to book a winter break will be excited to hear about British Airways’ newest route.

The airline will launch its first ever flight to Tromsø, Norway, this December.

The airline said: “Operating from December 1, 2024, Tromsø will become the airline’s most northernly destination globally and is available for customers to book now.

“The Norwegian city is known as being one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis, thanks to its central position in the northern lights’ oval.

“With average winter temperatures ranging from 0°C to -5°C, the destination’s abundant snowfall also lends itself to winter activities including skiing, mountaineering and whale watching.

“This winter wonderland, which is in the Arctic Circle, is also a popular destination for those who enjoy exploring Christmas markets. The city’s most picturesque market and its Christmas tree is located in the main square, Stortorget.”

Visitors to Tromsø have taken to Tripadvisor to share their love of the city and the plethora of things to see. One visitor to the Tromsø fjords called it “a sight to behold in the winter”.

Another said: “It is definitely a worthy trip to go and enjoy nature in its purest form.”

A visitor to the cathedral Tromsø Donkirke said: “A beautiful old wooden building right in the centre of Tromsø. The first time we visited was in the dark so saw it lit up amongst the beautiful snow and the lights of all the surrounding shops.

“It’s got a great warm and welcoming feel inside and the upper balconies reminded me of some of the older churches back home in Scotland… a must-visit when in Tromsø.”

Tromsø Wilderness Centre is one of Norway’s leading tourist destinations. It started out as a home for dogs and is home to over 300 furry friends. The centre holds tours with dogsleds, Northern Lights tours, glacier hikes and kayak trips in the summer.

A visitor from down under was delighted with their experience, awarding it five stars out of five. They said: “WOW, what a journey. We are a family of four from Australia and as dog lovers, we decided to do guided dog sledding.

“We were picked up In Tromsø by a very comfortable bus and transported to the facility – from the moment we arrived, they were straight into it like a well-oiled machine.

“The trail they took was majestic with such beautiful views. On arrival back at base you are invited to sit down around a fire and are given warm drinks and a meal before boarding the bus for the return journey.

“Between returning from the sleigh ride and meal there is ample time to spend with the dogs to pat them and give them thanks for all their hard work.

“If I could give this business a higher rating I would. Thank you to the wonderful staff for an amazing experience.”

British Airways’ chief planning and strategy officer, Neil Chernoff, commented on the exciting launch.

He said: “Those who missed the northern lights in the UK need not worry! We are excited to welcome Tromsø to our route network – it is a growing winter leisure market thanks to its abundance of cold-weather activities and we’ll be the only premium carrier operating there from the UK.

“We’ve optimised the schedule for three- and four-night trips, which we know are perfect for a destination like this.”

Return flights are available now from £153 and will run twice a week until March 2025. Customers can take skiing or snowboarding equipment as part of their checked baggage so long as the bag is within 190 x 75 x 65cm. Customers looking for holiday packages can enjoy a wide selection from British Airways Holidays.
