Mallorca is renowned for its relaxing atmosphere, but unsustainable traffic levels are becoming a massive drawback for expats living on the island.

British holidaymakers planning to jet off to tourist destination have been warned of “nightmare” conditions on the island, with locals advising to use public transport during their visit.

UK expat and content creator Alex, warned against hiring a car at the popular holiday hotspot as motorways are slowly “turning into car parks”.

In the announcement posted on the YouTube channel Mallorca Under The Sun, she claimed slow traffic levels have made finding a parking space nearly impossible.

“First I am going to bring you a few issues from the island of Mallorca to prepare you for your holiday,” Alex said in the clip.

“I was to start this video […] with a warning, I want to talk through this because I know many of you are planning to come on holiday to Mallorca.

“I know you’re considering hiring a car, and I know many of you are thinking that is going to be the best way to get around the island.

“I’m afraid I do have some news for you, at the moment the island is absolutely chockablock with cars, particularly in the afternoon, particularly in the South West, from Magaluf all the way up to Palma, skirting around the MA20 motorway, in the direction of the airport.”

She also warned viewers that “this may well affect people getting flights in the afternoon and in the evening”.

“The traffic is an absolute nightmare,” the content creator added. “That’s the only way I can describe it at the moment.

“The motorway on the way to the airport in the afternoons is already turning into a car park – there are just too many hire cars on the island at present.”

Alex says public transport is your best bet for a stress-free getaway, as it’s both inexpensive and efficient.

“If you’re wondering how to get around the island this summer if you want to remove the stress from your holiday, then really consider taking public transport,” she told followers.

“It’s incredibly cheap, it’s incredibly inexpensive, it’s quite efficient as well. If there are any delays these tend to be around 10 to 20 minutes maximum.

“If you are driving instead, you’re going to spend a lot longer driving around, looking for a parking spot, it’s been an absolute nightmare trying to find parking, particularly in the old town.”

Authorities on the island recently warned that tourists coming in via cruise ships could soon be hit by new restrictions.

Luxury liners entering Mallorca may be subjected to a Venice-style ban as part of an initiative to limit the number of visitors on the island.

The Committee on Tourism, Trade, Employment, Culture and Sport, has already approved plans to reintroduce a cap on cruise ships entering Mallorca’s capital of Palma.
