Tyson Fury tactics and game plan set for ‘adjustments’ ahead of huge Oleksandr Usyk fight

Tyson Fury’s trainer SugarHill Steward has admitted he’s likely to make some ‘adjustments’ to their tactics ahead of the Gypsy King’s bout with Oleksandr Usyk on May 18.

Fury and Usyk are both preparing for the showdown next month, which will take place in Saudi Arabia.

The Gypsy King has a point to prove, having struggled during his narrow victory over Francis Ngannou back in October.

Speaking recently, Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassyuk expressed a belief that Fury ‘doesn’t know how to deal with a southpaw’.

He told ProBox TV: “The worst thing about Tyson Fury is that he doesn’t know how to deal with a southpaw.

“That is the worst thing about him fighting Usyk; he doesn’t know the concept.

“He doesn’t know when to step in and out of his attacks. Just a normal technical mistake, he has done it a lot.”

And Steward, speaking to Boxing Scene, has now admitted they’re likely to make ‘adjustments’ to their tactics and game plan.

“I haven’t changed anything in that respect,” he said.

“I wasn’t in his corner for the [Otto] Wallin fight, and we’ve not faced a southpaw since, so there wasn’t anything to change.

“It’s about adding something extra to what he already has. Tyson has a great mind and he’s very intelligent, he is one of the best.

“The Wallin fight he won anyway, the problems he had were from the cut he had on the night.

“Did [Krassyuk] really say that? I might have to change some things in the camp.

“I’m not going to tell you what I’m going to change, obviously.

“I can’t be giving away our game plan for the Usyk fight. [But] I will be making some adjustments.”

Fury struggled when he fought southpaw Otto Wallin back in 2019.

The Gypsy King sustained a serious cut but still managed to win via unanimous decision.

And it’ll be interesting to see how he fares when he steps into the ring to face Usyk, who has already beaten Anthony Joshua twice in the past.

Fury held a snap press conference earlier this week.

While he doesn’t fear Usyk, the Briton is worried that he’s ready too soon for the fight – and could come down with something like an illness or infection as a result.

He told Queensbury Promotions: “I’m actually frightened of where I am at the moment, and that’s a fact.

“I won’t lie to you, I’m actually terrified of where I am at the moment, because I’m ready to go this weekend – and I’ve got five more weekends to go.

“So, like Sugar said, the thing is not doing tons of training, but it’s to do less, because I’m already ready.

“And if I peak too soon, then I’ll come down with an illness, a flu chest, infection, whatever – and then it’s all f****d.”

Fury has also clarified his fight with Usyk is mere business and not personal.

“This is not personal. It’s strictly business for both fighters,” he stated.

“I don’t hate him and he don’t hate me. He’s a good husband, a god-fearing man.

“I respect him as a man and a fighter.”
