Drivers and holidaygoers are being warned of a major incident taking place near Heathrow Airport which could lead to long delays.

Traffic has been stopped on the M4 eastbound between Junction 5 Slough and Junction 4B (M25) at Berkshire.

National Highways: East warned motorists of the new incident on social media site X following a “multi-vehicle collision”.

Thames Valley Police and Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service are attending the scene, with the organisation warning of delays.

At present, the event is expected to clear between 10am and 10.15am, according to the National Highways.

It shows long lines of slow-moving traffic and the road closure on one of the busiest routes on the way to Heathrow Airport.

Two of the five lanes on the motorway have now been closed, with four miles of congestion causing around 50 minutes of delays.

It has been estimated that normal traffic conditions are expected between 11.45am and midday later this morning.

While the rush of the Easter bank holiday weekend is over, many are still looking to jet off for an early holiday, with estimates that two million people have already visited an airport this week.

Families will look to get away during the Easter school holidays and could be left reeling by the traffic chaos, especially if they have a flight to catch.

Travellers looking to visit Heathrow Airport could face more chaos this month with more than 600 Border Force officials set to take strike action.

The industrial action will take place from April 11 until April 14 after 90 per cent of union members voted in favour of the walkout.

It comes amid anger from workers about new rules for rosters and imposed changes to shift patterns.
