Many Britons may have already booked their 2024 summer holidays, but others will still be deliberating on the best destination for them.
A travel expert spoke exclusively to GB News about the top holiday spot in Europe for Britons this summer. Athens, Greece’s capital city, might be your best bet.
Nadua Elgabu from Stayforlong told GB News that Athens, with its “rich history, vibrant culture, and delectable cuisine”, is a great pick.
Athens is a fabulous choice for Britons who want to experience the kind of scorching summer the UK rarely sees.

According to Holiday Weather, the average temperature in Athens is 26C in June, 29C in July, 29C in August, and 24C in September.
As well as divine weather, there’s plenty to do on this Greek getaway, from monuments to markets to museums.
The travel expert said: “No visit to Athens is complete without exploring the majestic Acropolis, an ancient citadel perched atop a rocky outcrop.
“Embrace the architectural wonders located here – including the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena Nike, while enjoying the panoramic views of Athens below.
“If you’re interested in something more vibrant, a trip to Monastiraki Square is essential. Buzz through the flea markets while sampling traditional street food admire and admiring the Byzantine churches.
“Finish with a visit to the nearby Ancient Agora, a bustling marketplace in antiquity and a significant archaeological site today.”
History enthusiasts should meander through The National Archaeological Museum, which “promises a journey to Ancient Greece, home to an extensive collection of ancient artifacts spanning thousands of years”.
The expert said: “From intricate sculptures to exquisite pottery, this museum offers a captivating glimpse into Greece’s rich heritage.”
Visitors to beautiful Athens have taken to Tripadvisor to share their recommendations for those heading to the city.
One holidaymaker said: “The Acropolis site is in no doubt one of the most important and beautiful sites of the ancient world, centred at that time in Athens.

“The buildings, notably the Parthenon – but Athina’s shrine as well are magnificent – still carry proudly their former glory 2,500 years later. An unbelievable work with fantastic results.”
For more Athens must-sees, one visitor to Lake Vouliagmeni called it a “perfect destination”. They said: “The lake is gorgeous. When I was there it was 19C outside and 22C in the lake. Even though it was quite busy it was still so peaceful and relaxing.”
While Athens is famous for its rich historical sites, the Greek capital is also home to some beautiful beaches.
A visitor to Bikini Beach said it was “stunning”. They said: “Location is gorgeous and under half an hour’s drive from Athens city centre, the beach was very quiet and clean.” Other beaches include Voula Beach, Porto Rafti Beach, Beach Club Alimos and Saronida Beach.
