James May has taken a tongue-in-cheek dig at his The Grand Tour co-star Richard Hammond’s “stupidity” following a costly mistake he made in the upcoming special.

The Grand Tour: Sand Job will see May, Hammond and their former Top Gear colleague Jeremy Clarkson heading to Africa for their penultimate adventure.

The trio will travel to the remote country of Mauritania, where they must complete their journey in modified, desirable sports cars – which they’ve bought on a budget.

Clarkson opted for a Jaguar F Type V6, with Hammond picking an Aston Martin Volante and May going for a Maserati.

It seems Hammond may have ended up regretting his decision though, with May labelling his choice as “frank stupidity.”

May, 61, didn’t hold back as he said of Hammond’s choices in the upcoming special: “I think it’s frank stupidity.

“There are sophisticated electronics in all modern cars which can go wrong, and small faults can be quite difficult to fix if you haven’t got the right diagnostic equipment, which generally you don’t have in the middle of a desert.

“So, the generous reply would be that it was just bad luck, but I prefer the response that it was due to uselessness.”

When asked if the series would appeal to petrol heads, James replied: “It’s certainly a bit more car-y than some other ones.

“We sort of alternate between car-y ones and more travel/sitcom ones.

“Eurocrash was not very car-y, but the French one was about car history, for example, and I’d say on that scale, this one leans towards being quite car-y.

“All three cars that we drove are interesting. They’re all desirable cars, at least in their original form, and the idea of modelling a car and racing them across a desert is quite appealing to a lot of people.”

Fans have been looking forward to new episodes of the hit series, which first debuted on Prime Video in 2016.

Speaking about the location of the upcoming episode, James stated: “We actually all quite like being in a desert.

“We like the dust and the sand and the heat. It’s exhausting, but it’s all the things that TE Lawrence talked about, he said, ‘The desert cleans you and it’s pure’, and I think that’s true.

“We all slightly get off on that and we feel like we’re being really heroic and manly.”

The instalment will be the penultimate show that all three star together in and the beloved trio will likely face more adventures and mishaps in the series finale later this year.

Following the Mauritania instalment, the final episode will see the trio heading to Zimbabwe.
