Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has confirmed he would have no doubts about working with Bill Belichick.

A role for 2024 appears to be out of the question but Jones has not ruled out appointing the 71-year-old in the future.

Belichick left his position as New England Patriots head coach on January 11 after 24 seasons in charge.

He led the Patriots to nine Super Bowls, winning six, but was unable to replicate that success following Tom Brady’s departure in 2019.

Belichick and owner Robert Kraft reached a ‘mutual’ agreement that it would be best for all parties to part ways.

He was linked with an immediate return to coaching with the Atalanta Falcons and even had several interviews.

But the Falcons instead opted to appoint Raheem Morris last week.

With no other head coach vacancies, Belichick will likely have to sit tight for the 2024 season, with a role in TV punditry potentially on the agenda.

But CBS Sports claimed this week that he still has a desire to be a head coach again, even if he has to wait until 2025.

There was speculation over the future of current Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy after exiting the play-offs earlier than expected in each of his three years in charge so far.

Jones has put his full backing behind McCarthy for the time being and insists he did not speak to any other candidates.

The 81-year-old told Yahoo: “I don’t want to get into, for reasons of talking about anybody that I may have talked to that’s been bantered around about coaching.

“But I didn’t talk to anybody. I haven’t talked to anybody that is a head-coaching candidate other than my own.”

Jones admits he is unsure whether there remains a future in coaching for Belichick, stating: “I don’t know. I don’t know. I wouldn’t speculate.”

However, he then admitted it wouldn’t be a possibility he would entirely rule out in the future.

Jones said: “I know him personally and I like him. There’s no doubt in my mind we could work together. None. None.”

McCarthy has just one year remaining on his contract with the Cowboys and Belichick could be eyeing his position.

Belichick has previously been enthusiastic in his praise for the impact Jones and his son and CEO Stephen have had on the Dallas team.

He said last year: “I have a ton of respect for Jerry and Stephen, and the way they run the organization down there. They’ve had decades of success.

“They were really the team of the ‘90s with Jimmy [Johnson] and they’ve been good. They’ve been competitive every year, obviously more than competitive.

“They’ve had a lot of great players down there. Tony [Romo] had a great run. Those are great years there with Tony, Coach [Bill] Parcells.

“We played them here in the early 2000s, but I always keep an eye on them, just the way they do things.

“They’ve gotten a lot of players that they’ve gotten a lot of production from that I’d say aren’t big-name players — free agents, guys that they dig out down there.

“I think their scouting staff does a good job. They’re very experienced. Almost all of their scouts have been with the Cowboys their entire career, so they home-grow them and they learn their system.”
