Portugal is a gorgeous holiday destination and a very popular one among Britons.

With the help of Azores Airlines, holidaymakers will be able to visit a brand new destination in sunny Portugal, Ponta Delgada.

This new flight will depart from Gatwick Airport from June 4, 2024, just in time for the summer holidays.

Britons can fly direct to Ponta Delgada via the London airport from £198 in June, if bought through Skyscanner.

VisitPortugal told travellers why they must visit the beautiful Ponta Delgada. Coming from humble beginnings as a “simple fishing village whose fishermen were once attracted by its safe coves”, it is now the main port of the São Miguel Island.

Experts said: “Ponta Delgada is today a cosmopolitan city, outward-looking, with a lively economic and cultural life. The extensive coastline road, which borders the harbour and the sea outlining the city, is the expression of its dynamism, adapting to new times and also the access road to the city.

“Boasting a history of over five centuries and precious testimonies of the past, Ponta Delgada is a multifaceted city where tradition lives hand-in-hand with the present and cosmopolitanism with the wholesome tranquility of the Azorean life.”

Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião is a beautiful, must-see church in Ponta Delgada.

This is not the only new locations Britons can visit from Gatwick this year.

Portugal is a popular destination for a summer holiday.

One visitor to the church told Tripadvisor: “The church is in the heart of town. The interior is large and quite beautiful. Its exterior is equally impressive at night. Added bonus: the huge clock keeps accurate time and has a nice chime.”

Ponta da Ferraria promises “beautiful scenery, impressive waves against the coast and this lovely little bay with incredibly warm water”.

Pineapple enthusiasts need to check out Plantacao de Ananas dos Acores where they can immerse themselves in the “magical journey of the Azorean pineapple”, the travel experts at Tripadvisor said.

One visitor said: “It was fascinating to learn how pineapples are cultivated and to see greenhouses full of pineapples at various stages of growth. It was particularly wonderful to see a flowering pineapple plant.”

This comes as Jet2 announces new route from the UK to Italy, France and more.
