A third man has died and another remains in a critical condition following a house fire in south London.

Firefighters and other emergency services were called to an address in Sanderstead Road, Croydon, just before 11pm on Friday night.

Two men – one of whom is thought to be in his 40s – were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say a third man, believed to be aged in his 30s, was taken to hospital, where he died on Saturday afternoon.

All three men are thought to be Polish nationals, according to police.

“Officers are working to confirm the identity of the three men and inform their family,” a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Police say two other men, also believed to be Polish nationals, self-presented at a hospital following the fire.

One of the men, aged in his 30s, remains in a life-threatening condition, while the other has been discharged from hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) and the Metropolitan Police.

The fire broke out in a two-storey terraced house with its windows boarded up.

At least four fire engines fought the blaze, with crime scene tents later erected around the property.

Chief Inspector Imran Asghar, of the force’s south area basic command unit (BCU), said: “This is an extremely sad incident, which has led to the deaths of three men, while a fourth man remains in hospital in a critical condition.

“My colleagues have made significant progress towards confirming the identities of the men and providing support to their families.

“This process is ongoing. At this stage, I understand that the three men who have died were Polish nationals, as are the other two men who attended hospital.

“Enquiries by specialist police and fire investigators are under way to establish the cause of the fire.”
