Tens of thousands of passengers are facing significant Christmas travel disruption tonight after Storm Pia caused chaos on railways, roads and airports.

Hundreds of festive travellers were stuck outside Euston and Kings Cross stations due to significant delays after winds knocked trees onto key overhead lines.

Journeys from London to Scotland and the North were delayed by several hours on both the West Coast and East Coast mainlines.

LNER and Avanti said delays were expected well into tonight after dozens of trains were cancelled or significantly delayed.

Elsewhere, French staff went on strike last-minute on the Eurostar, cancelling at least 25 services until 7pm.

The vehicle-only Le Shuttle service was also enduring heavy delays between Folkestone and Calais due to the strikes.

The Eurostar confirmed at 7pm that the strike is over and there will be a progressive return to services.

The weather is expected to ease tonight, with the Met Office saying that Storm Pia is gradually moving towards mainland Europe.

Rain is expected into the weekend and snow is expected in the far north, but the vicious winds that have battered Britain are set to calm tonight.
